Over the last two months we have collected letters from children written to service men and women overseas. This Saturday we will share some of those letters with you.
We will also dedicate this week’s show not just to the men and women who have fallen in battle in commemoration of Memorial Day on Monday but also all of our troops and their families as we remember Armed Forces Day which was last Saturday, May 17.
Three guests will join us with varying perspectives on Memorial Day and war time experiences.
First up, Dr. William Forstchen. Dr. Forstchen is a Faculty Fellow at Montreat, College in North Carolina, and the author of over 40 books. Most recently he has co-authored, with Newt Gingrich, DAYS OF INFAMY. Following on the success of their book PEARL HARBOR, DAYS OF INFAMY is book using “active history,” a term they invented to describe how a change in one decision might have changed history. DAYS OF INFAMY, recounts an alternative history from a multitude of viewpoints but which, in the end, pays homage to the survivors of the real Pearl Harbor attack.
Michael Hastings has worked for Newsweek Magazine since 2002. He has filed stories from Israel, Gaza, Kurdistan, Vietnam and the Middle East. In 2007 his fiancee, also working in the Middle East at the time, died in a car bomb attack. His book, I LOST MY LOVE IN BAGHDAD, tells of their relationship and experiences overseas. It is a reminder to us all, that many more people than traditional soldiers serve in war zones to support America.
In the last hour, I’ll talk to Joe Mantegna. Joe currently stars as David Rossi on CBS’s Criminal Minds and will co-host, with Gary Sinese, the National Memorial Day Concert from Washington DC before a live audience of over 300,000 people, Sunday night from 8-9:30 pm Eastern time on PBS. Joe will share with us his thoughts on Memorial Day and what the concert is all about.

I hope you have a great family weekend. While the Presidential election continues we seem to be feeling more and more divided as a country. holidays like Memorial Day really serve to bring us all together and remind us of our commonality as Americans and not our differences.
